How to Lubricate Flange Bolting

Built to spec. Made in Texas.

Lubrication is what makes torque predictable. PCC-1-2026 Section 8 asks for it whatever tightening method is used. Here is how to apply it. A printable PDF (PB-TD-218) is below. Values are for reference; confirm against the current edition of the governing standard. Send us your bolting list for a quote or call (281) 581-0176.

Where to apply

  • On all working surfaces: stud threads, nut threads, nut bearing faces and washer faces.
  • Fill the threads from root to crest at both ends of the stud.
  • Carry it past the point where the nut will sit, so the nut runs on lubricated thread the whole way.
  • A small bead of excess should be visible once the nut is on.

Where not to apply

  • Not on the gasket.
  • Not on the flange gasket seating surfaces.
  • No grease or tape across the sealing face to hold the gasket in place (Sec. 7).

Choosing a lubricant

  • Use a lubricant compatible with the process fluid and the bolting material.
  • Its maximum temperature rating does not predict nut factor or disassembly (App K).
  • Use the nut factor that matches the lubricant and coating in your torque calculation. See the Nut Factor (K) Guide.
