Patriot Bolt machines A286 fasteners from certified round bar for bolted joints that see high temperature, cryogenic cold or corrosive service. A286, also called Alloy 660, Grade 660 and Incoloy A-286 (UNS S66286), is an age-hardenable iron-nickel-chromium superalloy. It reaches 130 ksi minimum tensile strength and keeps its strength and oxidation resistance to about 1300 °F.
This page brings together every A286 fastener we make, how the ASTM A453 Grade 660 classes compare, and when A286 is the right choice over alloy steel, stainless or Inconel.

ASTM A453 Grade 660 Classes
All four classes share the same chemistry; the heat treatment changes the properties. Order the class your design or code calls for.
| Class | Tensile, min | Yield (0.2%), min | Hardness (HB) | Commonly specified for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A, B, C | 130 ksi | 85 ksi | 248–341 | High-temperature bolting in power, petrochemical and turbine equipment |
| D (to 2-1/2 in.) | 130 ksi | 105 ksi | 248–321 | Oil and gas bolting where a higher yield and lower hardness limit are required |
Full chemistry and class details are on the A286 socket head cap screws page.
A286 vs. Other Bolting Grades
| Grade | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| A286 (Grade 660) | 130 ksi min tensile, strength to about 1300 °F, cryogenic toughness, non-magnetic | Higher cost than alloy steel; can gall without lubricant |
| Alloy steel (B7, B16) | Economical, high strength at normal temperatures | Needs coating for corrosion; loses strength and scales at high temperature |
| 316 stainless (B8M) | Good corrosion resistance | Much lower strength: B8M Class 1 has a 30 ksi minimum yield |
| 17-4 PH stainless | High strength, good corrosion resistance | Magnetic; generally used at lower temperatures than A286 |
| Inconel 718 | Higher strength and temperature capability than A286 | Higher cost and longer lead times |

A286 Fastener FAQ
Is A286 the same as Alloy 660?
Yes. A286, Alloy 660, Grade 660 and Incoloy A-286 all refer to UNS S66286. “Grade 660” is the ASTM A453 bolting designation; AMS 5731, 5732, 5734 and 5737 cover A286 bar for aerospace drawings.
Which A286 fasteners does Patriot Bolt make?
We machine A286 socket head cap screws, stud bolts, hex head cap screws, nuts, 12-point flange bolts and shoulder bolts, as well as custom parts made to your drawing.
Which specification should I put on my purchase order?
Industrial and oil and gas bolting usually calls out ASTM A453 Grade 660 with a class (A, B, C or D). Aerospace parts usually call out an AMS bar specification on the drawing. If you are unsure, send us the application and we will help you choose.
Do A286 fasteners come with certifications?
Yes. Patriot Bolt is ISO 9001:2015 certified, and every A286 order includes mill test reports traceable to the heat and a certificate of conformance to your purchase order.
