Patriot Bolt machines ASTM A449 stud bolts from medium-carbon or alloy steel bar, quenched and tempered to the specification. A449 is a medium-strength grade for general engineering use, close in strength to SAE J429 Grade 5, and it covers bolts, studs and rods from 1/4 to 3 in.
We make A449 studs to your purchase order or drawing, and supply matching A563 nuts. Every order ships with mill test reports traceable to the heat.
A449 Stud Bolts at a Glance

Why Engineers Specify A449 Studs
- Grade 5 strength in larger sizes. SAE J429 stops at 1-1/2 in. A449 carries similar properties up to 3 in.
- Any configuration. A449 is not tied to a head style, so it covers studs, threaded rod and anchor rods.
- Heat treated. Quenching and tempering give predictable strength at a moderate cost.
For higher strength in the same sizes, step up to A354 BC or BD.
A449 Stud Bolt Specifications
ASTM A449 sets properties by diameter. Larger sizes have lower minimums.
| Diameter | Tensile, min | Yield (0.2%), min | Elongation, min | Reduction of area, min |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/4–1 in | 120 ksi | 92 ksi | 14% | 35% |
| 1-1/8–1-1/2 in | 105 ksi | 81 ksi | 14% | 35% |
| 1-5/8–3 in | 90 ksi | 58 ksi | 14% | 35% |
A449 Type 1 Chemical Composition
| Element | Carbon steel | Alloy steel |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon | 0.30–0.52 | 0.30–0.52 |
| Manganese | 0.60 min | 0.60 min |
| Phosphorus | 0.040 max | 0.035 max |
| Sulfur | 0.050 max | 0.040 max |
| Silicon | 0.15–0.30 | 0.15–0.35 |
A449 also allows carbon-boron and alloy-boron steels, and a Type 3 weathering steel. The mill test report for your heat is the controlling document.
Stud Configurations
- Fully threaded studs, threaded end to end, for flange bolting where grip length varies.
- Double-end studs, threaded on both ends with an unthreaded center.
- Tap-end studs, with one end made to thread into a tapped hole.

Certification and Traceability
Patriot Bolt is ISO 9001:2015 certified. Each A449 order includes mill test reports traceable to the heat, along with a certificate of conformance to the specification on your purchase order.
Studs are marked with the grade symbol and our identification, as the specification requires.

A449 Stud Bolts FAQ
How does A449 compare with SAE J429 Grade 5?
They have nearly the same chemistry and strength through 1-1/2 in. A449 also covers sizes up to 3 in and is not tied to a configuration.
Which nut goes with A449?
A563 nuts. For galvanized A449, use A563 Grade DH heavy hex nuts.
Why does strength drop at larger diameters?
Thick sections do not harden as fully through the core during quenching, so the specification sets lower minimums above 1 in and above 1-1/2 in.
Can you make A449 studs to my drawing?
Yes. We machine A449 studs and threaded rod in any diameter up to 3 in, length and thread.
