Powered Torque Tools

Built to spec. Made in Texas.

Powered tools make large bolts practical but bring their own accuracy issues. This page summarizes PCC-1-2026 Appendix Q for torque tools and tool checks. A printable PDF (PB-TD-222) is below. Values are for reference; confirm against the current edition of the governing standard. Send us your bolting list for a quote or call (281) 581-0176.

Selecting a tool

  • Use tools between 20% and 80% of their range. Accuracy drops at the low end (Q-1).
  • Air impact guns are excluded. They give no accurate torque control.
  • Hydraulic torque wrenches are typically used above about 500 ft-lb (Q-3.4).
  • Pneumatic and electric gear tools need more frequent calibration. Do not re-pull the trigger after the tool stalls (Q-2).

Calibration and checks (Q-5)

  • Manual torque tools: annual calibration per ISO 6789-2. Annual is good practice for powered tools too.
  • Verification: torque within the tool’s rated accuracy or ±10%; load verification within ±20% of target.
  • A tool that fails is marked out of service.
  • Keep calibration records.

Bolt load scatter

Even with good tools, torque-controlled bolt load scatters because the nut factor varies by 20% or more (Q-3.3). For tighter control, consider tensioning or elongation measurement. See the Tensioning Pressure Calculator and Bolt Elongation Calculator.
