Reused bolting adds scatter to bolt load. PCC-1-2026 Appendix N explains when new studs and nuts are the better choice and how to handle reuse when it makes sense. A printable PDF (PB-TD-216) is below. Values are for reference; confirm against the current edition of the governing standard. Send us your bolting list for a quote or call (281) 581-0176.

Why it matters
With torque control, new bolting typically scatters about ±30% in load. Well-lubricated bolting is mostly within ±15%, and many joints within ±10% (App N-1). Damaged or dirty threads widen that scatter.
Guidance
- Up to about 1-1/8 in. (M30), new studs and nuts are recommended when controlled bolt-load methods are used. For larger sizes, compare the cost of cleaning and inspection with new (N-3(a)).
- Replace bolting that has been abused or was installed without lubricant (N-3(b)).
- If one stud is replaced, replacing all of them is recommended. If not, space the new ones symmetrically (N-2(h)).
- Thread dies do not leave a clean thread. Re-turning on a lathe is preferred, staying within ASME B1.1 limits (N-3(c)).
- Nuts are not generally reconditioned (N-3(d)).
- Do not reuse gaskets. Grooved metal gaskets may be refaced by the manufacturer (N-4).
Patriot Bolt
Patriot Bolt manufactures new stud bolts and heavy hex nuts from certified bar with mill test reports. We do not recondition or restore used bolting.
